Kiambethu Tea Farm Tour, Tigoni
A Historic Tea Experience in Kenya’s Highlands
Just a short drive from the heart of Nairobi, Kiambethu Tea Farm in Limuru offers a rare and tranquil glimpse into the origins of Kenya’s tea industry. Set within rolling tea fields, indigenous forest, and beautifully kept gardens, the farm combines history, nature, and warm hospitality into one unforgettable experience.
A Pioneer of Tea in Kenya
Situated at an elevation of 7,200 feet above sea level, Kiambethu was purchased and developed in 1910 by A.B. McDonell, a pioneer of commercial tea farming in Kenya. At a time when tea was still being grown on an experimental basis, McDonell became one of the first to successfully produce and sell tea commercially — laying the foundation for what is now one of Kenya’s most important export industries.
The farm has been home to five generations of the same family and is today lovingly run by McDonell’s granddaughter, Fiona Vernon, preserving both its agricultural heritage and its welcoming, personal character.
The Setting: Tea, Forest, and Wildlife
The farmhouse sits within expansive gardens, surrounded by acres of tea plantations and indigenous forest. This natural setting is home to a rich variety of birdlife and is well known for sightings of the striking black-and-white Colobus monkeys, which often move gracefully through the treetops.
The peaceful environment and highland climate make Kiambethu an ideal retreat for visitors seeking calm, beauty, and connection to nature.
